Quieting the sound
Watching the view, the clues
From out of the blue
Something else may come to you
Where you engage something new

This real time approach, meets you just where you are. No matter where that is, it is possible to discover something else that can move you differently.
No need to plan in advance, set time aside or do a multitude of steps before you begin. You can contribute in any moment that is available to you.
Currently in your day to day, you are experiencing things that make up your life; it may consist of work, family, sport, business, lifestyle, relationships, career, health, wellbeing, passions. You may already sense what is working for you or what is not.
So it will be from any of the things that arrive in your day, that you will be working with. You have the chance to discover beyond your usual view and take different actions with less harm and more alignment.
Noticing what matters
So in moments that don’t feel good for you, you have the chance to make different choices that bring about a deeper sense of happiness and wellbeing.
It is when you are less affected by the bias and legacies of the past and you become more present to feel the true nature of what is actually happening around and in you, new choices may become possible.
So what provides the clues to the biases?
The answer to this question, already exists. If you are not feeling deeply happy or in good health or wellbeing, or you are feeling that something is missing in your life, or you are churning inside over something (either known or unknown) or you are triggered by something that has led you to react in ways that are not kind or helpful, it already highlights there is something (usually a hidden rule or belief) that is affecting and limiting you.
The signals
The signs will present to you in the type of emotions, reactions, physiological responses, feelings, thoughts, worries, pain, fears that arrive. Rather than ignore these signals, see them as the information you need to guide you to deeper happiness.

After going through cancer, I chose to follow my passion for life coaching. There was so much I wanted to share about what I was beginning to see after my cancer experience. Interestingly it was a time when I began to notice fears, doubt, anxieties from significant legacies from the past / future, that all affected my here and now.
For example, I wanted to write about short perspectives on the website I had created, however I was blocked by my inner story telling me that ‘I can’t write’. You see this was told to me by an English teacher I had in high school, and since that time, my self talk questioned my worthiness to write my thoughts and perspectives

As you begin to notice and understand the personal signals, you can take the next steps to seeing things differently and choosing differently.
When you give yourself the time and space (as there was during my recovery after cancer), you can follow the trail of thoughts that heads you into inner turmoil and contradictions. In time it is the path to better understand and see things more clearly.
I began to wonder why the opinion of others mattered.
This popped up as a question while I was enjoying the space. It was useful.
I also explored the reason why I wanted to write. The strength of this feeling and desire behind my why, helped me to see that my expression and message was personal and that is what mattered. After arriving at this point, I began my writing in ways that reflected me.
Have you found yourself inhibited because of your own inner talk?
Your auto pilot reactions
By better noticing and understanding how your thoughts, reactions and automatic pilot way of life are not necessarily truths, you can break away from the rules and beliefs gathered, and learn much more about you, your potential and about others.

I was creating and discovering new capabilities within me. I was writing in my own way, and it was working for me. In fact some people also expressed they liked the way I brought my views, though I wasn’t seeking their approval. It was feeling good for me. It was feeding my whole self, my heart, mind, body and spirit. It was not just about the writing, it was the feeling it brought and the learning. I was discovering how to put my energy and mental capacity towards what would improve my ability to write.
When you discover what it feels like to exist as yourself, there’s no need to ‘try’ and be anything to ‘fit in’ or succeed. You realise you are the gift to the world just as you are and appreciate your own unique way of seeing and doing things.
When you do have moments that feel like this, it helps provide the incentive to keep going.
In a way, this is your work; to discover that person. As the pressure lessens to be or do something you are not or don’t want, you become more open to see things you may not have seen before. It is the beginning of taking different steps that you feel align better.
In the past you may not have listened in this way.
There is a reason for that.
Over trying
As humans we have been influenced by our human traits and patterns, some of which have been assisted us in our survival as a race, however over time, we have begun to see how they have negatively affected us.
One such trait is how we seek meaning to explain what we are in. Because based on our interpretation, we then form ideas around how to address it. We set our plans, goals, strategies and actions to move us in the direction we seek.
In isolation, this approach may sound plausible and doable. However in life, this interpretation leads us to create routines that we then tend to lock into.
We may even see this as ‘the way’ and do not notice when those things aren’t working for us any more or that our life situation has changed.
Instead we fixate on the goal. We may even dig deeper to work and try harder, smarter, longer. We have learnt about resilience and that has pushed us to our thresholds, our limits. It’s as though people at this time, are suffering the accumulative effect from the ‘over trying’. We hardly realise we can do things differently, or question ourselves as to why we are pushing.
In some instances we surrender and give up believing we have been unsuccessful. We are hard on ourselves when we ‘fail’.
What have you been chasing or overdoing?
In reality, this is not the way life goes. Everyday life is fluid, variable and uncertain. Each day is unpredictable. The way you feel, the way others feel, the changing nature of life events, all bring unexpected disruptions.
Take a moment to reflect on the everyday things that are unpredictable in your life.
What’s more in this world we are not conscious of the many entanglements and layers that makes setting concrete plans and conditionings difficult. It is the reason in reality we can only work with one step at a time, next moment at a time.
This provides an important change to our current approach. When we realise that in just one moment, in relation to any part of our life, a ripple effect can be unleashed in a different direction.
The lists you may hold in relation to the many ‘things to work on’, may already be obsolete before you commence!
Can you recall a time when something arrived, that changed the direction of your life?
Accept the nature of our humanness and phenomena
Trying to maintain something rigid, amongst a fluid and ever changing self and environment, takes up a lot of energy and time and it comes with a cost; the loss of your natural ability to freely and openly express, share and move in response to what is your truth, how you see things and what you feel.
It is likely, we have been projecting an image of ourselves that comes from an evolved approach that may not reflect our true selves.

I realise I was following the rules of what was expected of me. I chased what I believed I was meant to be following, and while I worked hard to achieve them, I could not see the way I was living each moment of my life.
While I gained a tertiary education, got married and had children by 22 years of age, I hadn’t done other things to broaden my understanding of myself, and what I needed to feel deeply happy and well.
While I gained a tertiary education, got married and had children by 22 years of age, I hadn’t done other things to broaden my understanding of myself, and what I needed to feel deeply happy and well.
I was more concerned with fitting in. I pursued goals that ‘brought success’. I had not considered what it would take in the day to day, to stay well and happy.
I realised I was in battle with something that was not the battle.
For so long we have been trying to control, in ourselves and in our environment, ways to achieve what’s on our list or to fit with expectations set upon us. That is until we can’t keep up with it all, and feel our lives are falling apart (which we are seeing more and more of).
When you work with what arrives, you work with your feelings and the changes that occur within you, as you face situations.
It helps you to choose in moments based on what you see and feel and how you want to live your life. Nothing more nothing less. In this, we accept that all moments are different, with different events and actions taking place. Let’s face it, over a day, there will always be many things that arrive, that will shift your focus.
Rather than pushing through with your plans to make your goals (or those of others) happen, you acknowledge and work with what matters to you most, so when they arrive and interrupt your day, you will notice them, and make choices that benefit your wellbeing and the path leading to more happiness.
Recall a time when you were interrupted by an important matter that took you away from your job, or where you were headed.
How did it feel? How did you respond?
An example of working with what arrives
I came to see that working with what arrives, also paths the way for improved outcomes. The two could work in harmony. It was not instead of. I discovered a link with success when personal needs were also met.

When Knit a Care Square (one of our community projects) began in 2017 our intention was to knit squares (that many people love and can easily do) in the hope of joining blankets to provide warmth and comfort to those sleeping rough or in need. Apart from it being a 20cm square, there were really no other conditions. It didn’t take long for people to get involved. People were working at their own pace, in their own way, and chose what parts they loved to do. In that first year, 17 blankets were made and donated.
As time went on, the need for the next step arrived. We were receiving squares with threads, so we asked if there were people able to sew in ends. Then as time went on we asked if there were more people who could join the squares via a crochet stitch. Then we asked of people could design the blankets to make up kits. Then people got involved to pass the blankets on to those in need.
In its own way and time, next steps were being formed all around the place, and the numbers grew. With no goals, planning, or set actions or prescriptions, each person involved contributed towards the vision, in amongst what was happening in their own daily lives.
In 2025, with this approach, Knit a Care Square produced over 800 blankets.
This organic and fluid approach, was very productive.
As people were balancing their lives and addressing the things they needed for their own wellbeing, they did what was possible towards their contribution to Knit a Care Square.
Some years, we found people were not able to knit or join because of other complex things happening in their lives; illness, cancer, injuries, financial crisis, court hearings, overseas travel. It didn’t matter, because there was never obligation or expectation. Often others stepped in, and filled the gaps. That is life.

Bringing this fluid approach (without rigid rules and goals) has been the thing that volunteers love. We found so many more people wanting to be involved because of the flexible nature, working within the context of their life and while doing what they loved.
Do you work with what arrives in your life in the here and now? Or do you carry legacies from past or future rules and beliefs that limit you (with anxiety) or stop you from contributing to what matters?
